14th Annual Final Event Competition!

For over a decade our nationally recognized program has been introducing students and the communities they live in to the important environmental, energy, and economic issues associated with alternative transportation fuels. Now known as The SMARTT Challenge it is still the country.s premier alternative fuel education program, unique because of its integration of several disciplines, including math, science, engineering, language arts and more. Each year hundreds of high school students experience a unique opportunity to design and convert gasoline vehicles to electric power, while middle school students design and build model solar race cars. For more information contact Jennifer Whitley at (919) 818-2377.

High School Electric Cars

High school students are provided with a yearlong educational program involving the entire school and community. Beginning in the fall of the school year, students begin learning about advanced transportation concepts as part of their curriculum. Throughout the year, they complete numerous projects, including the conversion of a gasoline vehicle to electric power. In the SMARTT Challenge's Final Event, they compete against other high schools to see who can go the farthest and fastest. They are also tested on their knowledge of the vehicle. Join us for a weekend of fun and show your support to the High School Students.

Middle School Junior Solar Sprint Cars

The SMARTT Challenge program is proud to offer a curriculum designed expressly for middle school students based on the National Junior Solar Sprint program (JSS), sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. The JSS program provides each student with a standard photovoltaic panel and electric motor to build a car using these components as the sole power train. The design must also carry a 12-ounce soft drink can as cargo; but beyond that requirement, most anything goes. Model cars are judged on technical innovation, creativity and speed. The middle school students will show off their hard work at this year.s event on:
