High School Program
High school students are provided with a yearlong educational program involving the entire school and community. Beginning in the fall of the school year, students begin learning about advanced transportation concepts as part of their curriculum. Throughout the year, they complete a numerous projects, culminating in the SMARTT Challenge’s Final Event, where they are recognized for their hard work.
The central activity is the research, design, and construction of a street-legal electric vehicle. In this process, the students remove the internal combustion parts of a gasoline vehicle and then rebuild it with electric vehicle components
The program really gets its strength from the variety of classes which participate in the EV Challenge For example, computer technology students get involved by designing a web site about their school’s program. Science classes conduct environmental studies and complete research about electric cars. Technology students gain valuable electrical troubleshooting skills, and English, marketing, and drama classes create presentations to inform their community about the program.
