Volunteering!
Join the many volunteers who each year work with students from across the southeast on the SMARTT Challenge. The EV Challenge (now known as the SMARTT Challenge) was recognized in 2003 by the US EPA as one of the top environmental education programs in the nation. It offers volunteers a unique chance to work with some of the brightest kids around, while helping to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and clean the environment.
What do we do?
Volunteers help out with two major projects for the SMARTT Challenge. In the fall, they staff the SMARTT Challenge mobile classroom at the North Carolina State Fair. This means helping to explain the benefits of alternative fuels to fair visitors who are welcome to peek under the hood of some of the high school competition vehicles.
In the spring, they make the SMARTT Challenge Final Event happen! This is a two day event and there's a need for
- judging the troubleshooting, oral presentation, design and technical inspection aspects,
- coordinating and judging the high school distance range event
- judging the middle school Junior Solar Sprint races, and
- coordinating and judging the high school autocross event.
Each year's Final Event is held in May (see the calendar for details). Come and join an enthusiastic group of volunteers and meet the students, parents and teachers who participate in the program!
